The Gray Man of Pawleys Island
October 10, 2025

They say you’ll know a storm is coming when you see him. A lone figure dressed in gray, standing just at the edge of the dunes on Pawleys Island, South Carolina. He doesn’t wave. He doesn’t speak. He only stares toward the sea.
The story goes back more than two hundred years. Some say he was a young man, newly engaged, racing home to see his bride when he drowned in the marshes. Others claim he was a sailor, lost in a storm, his body never found. Whoever he was, he returned — not with anger, but with warning.
Over the years, families walking the beach have reported seeing the Gray Man just days before a hurricane. He appears suddenly, then vanishes just as quick, leaving no footprints in the sand. And when the storm passes, those who saw him are often the ones whose homes are left standing.
Pawleys locals will tell you they don’t fear him. They look for him. Because when the Gray Man walks the shore, it means the island has been given a chance to prepare.
So, if you find yourself on that stretch of Carolina sand at dusk, keep your eyes on the horizon. If a man in gray appears, don’t look away. He might just be trying to save you.
Author’s Note: The legend of the Gray Man has been part of Pawleys Island folklore for over 200 years. Believed to be the spirit of a drowned young man returning to warn loved ones, he is said to appear before major storms. Documented sightings have been reported before hurricanes Hazel (1954), Hugo (1989), and Florence (2018). Locals don’t fear him — they see his presence as a sign of protection.
