Overview:
Since 1928, Blackie’s has been serving up hot dogs with a side of family tradition, neighborhood spirit, and just the right amount of heat. Originally opened as a gas station on the Waterbury/Cheshire line by Irish immigrant Mary Mahoney and her husband Art Blackman, it wasn’t long before the scent of grilled dogs—and the now-famous pepper relish—began to draw in locals and travelers alike. Nearly a century later, it’s still owned and operated by the same family, now in its fourth generation. The menu remains simple: hot dogs, cheeseburgers, chips, and drinks, just like it’s always been. And yes, they’re still closed on Fridays.

Why It’s Worth a Stop:
Few places hold onto their roots like Blackie’s. The hot dogs are snappy and flavorful, the relish is legendary (more on that below), and the vibe is timeless. Families make pilgrimages here. Locals bring their kids and grandkids. And the counter crew still serves with warmth, wit, and stories to spare. Whether you’re here for the first time or the hundredth, there’s something special about standing at that counter, ordering “two and a cheese,” and watching the neon glow through the garage doors.

What to Know Before You Go:
• Cash only—ATM on-site
• Closed every Friday (a tradition dating back to the founders)

• Open year-round; check website for hours

Fun Fact:
Blackie’s hot pepper relish made it to space—literally. When an astronaut on the International Space Station put in a request, NASA worked with the family to send a batch up in special squeeze bottles for the crew to enjoy.
